Fundamentals of art are found in the complex rendering of light and shadow. These images were created with charcoal and graphite. The drama achieved with charcoal can be compared to the refinement of graphite. Both have advantages to an artist. There are no tricks to hide behind with portriature. The artist’s skill is laid bare for the viewer’s judgement.
